Monthly net = new sales × margin + hours saved × hourly value − payment fees − software. Payback = setup ÷ monthly net. This is a planning estimate built on your own forecast; it does not predict sales, and tax treatment of the costs is outside its scope.
About the farm website roi calculator
An online store is a cost with a monthly bill attached, and it should be judged the way any farm purchase is judged: what does it return, and how soon. This calculator takes the online sales you expect, the share of those that are genuinely new rather than moved from the stand or market, your gross margin, the hours a month the store saves you and what those hours are worth, and sets them against software cost, payment fees, and the one-time setup. It returns monthly net contribution, payback months, net and return over the horizon you choose, and the monthly sales at which the store covers its own costs.
It is a planning tool built on your own forecast. It does not predict sales, and it works the same for any platform, including doing nothing.
Counting only what is new
A customer who used to text an order and now clicks one is convenient, but the margin on that sale is not new money. The share that is new sales input keeps the calculation honest: only that share of online sales is multiplied by gross margin. Payment fees, on the other hand, apply to every online order, because a moved order that used to be paid in cash now costs a card fee. If you are unsure, run the tool at 25% and 75% new sales and see whether the decision changes.
Software, fees, and setup
Rutgers Cooperative Extension's 2020 survey of online farm sales options listed build-your-own site plans from about $12 a month, farm-specific platforms at roughly $15 to $99 a month, and card processing near 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction, with some marketplaces taking 7% or more of sales. Those figures date from May 2020, so check current pricing before you enter it. Enter the plan you would actually choose, put any platform percentage into the payment fee field, and include domain, photography, design help, and your own setup hours in the one-time setup cost. Penn State Extension notes that e-commerce is time intensive to research, set up, and maintain, so a zero for setup hours is rarely right.
Payback, return, and break-even sales
Monthly net is new sales times margin, plus hours saved times hourly value, minus payment fees and software. Payback is setup cost divided by monthly net. Return over the horizon is total net (after setup) divided by everything spent (setup plus software and fees for the period). Break-even monthly sales is the online volume at which margin on new sales covers whatever software cost the saved hours do not; when saved labor alone exceeds the software bill it reads $0. Tax treatment of software and setup costs is not part of the tool.
Worked example
Expecting $2,500 a month in online sales with 50% of it new, at a 50% gross margin, gives $1,250 of new sales and $625 of gross profit a month. Three hours saved at $20 adds $60. Payment fees at 2.9% are $72.50 and software is $79, so monthly net is $533.50 and a $500 setup pays back in about 0.9 months. Over 24 months the store nets $12,304 after setup on $4,136 spent, a 297% return, and it would cover software and fees at about $85.97 in monthly sales.

Frequently asked questions
Is a website worth it for a small farm?
It is worth it when the margin on genuinely new sales plus the value of hours saved exceeds software, fees, and the setup spread over the period. At $1,250 a month of new sales and a 50% margin the case is clear; at $200 a month of moved sales it usually is not. Run your own numbers rather than someone else's.
How much does an online farm store cost per month?
Rutgers' 2020 comparison listed general site builders from about $12 a month, farm-specific platforms from roughly $15 to $99 a month, and card processing around 2.9% plus $0.30 per order. Marketplaces that bring customers often charge 7% or more of sales instead. Prices change, so check current pricing and enter the plan you would actually use.
How do I estimate hours saved?
List the order handling you do now: replying to texts, writing invoices, chasing payments, building the pickup list. Time a typical week and multiply by 4.33. Be conservative, and remember the store adds tasks too, such as updating inventory and photos.
What counts as new sales?
Orders you would not have received without the store: new customers, larger baskets from browsing, off-hours orders, and preorders that used to be lost. Orders from regulars who simply switched from text to web are moved sales and should not be counted as new.
What is a good ROI for a farm website?
Any positive net after counting your own setup and maintenance hours is a good result; most of the value is time saved and orders captured rather than a headline percentage. Compare the horizon return with what the same money would earn in a cooler, a hoop house, or a market fee.
