True labor cost
Total labor cost = base wages + your payroll-burden estimate + the value of owner/family time. Use your actual payroll and insurance figures; this tool does not calculate legal wage or tax obligations.
How to calculate the true cost of farm labor
Start with paid hours multiplied by base wages. Add a planning percentage for the employer costs that apply to your farm, then value owner and family time separately. Divide the total labor cost by finished units to see how much labor each sellable unit must recover.
Do not treat unpaid time as free
Owner time still has an opportunity cost, even when no paycheck leaves the business. Include production, washing, packing, selling, cleanup, messages, and recordkeeping when comparing products or sales channels.
Use your actual payroll burden
Employer taxes, insurance, benefits, overtime, and compliance costs vary by worker and location. This calculator deliberately asks for your own combined planning rate; it does not determine wages, payroll taxes, or legal obligations.
