About the farm labor cost calculator
Labor is the cost most small farms leave out of their prices, especially the owner's own hours. This calculator combines paid wages, a payroll burden you enter, and owner or family time into a total labor cost, a blended hourly rate, and labor cost per unit sold so every product carries its fair share.
How to calculate the true cost of farm labor
Start with paid hours multiplied by base wages. Add a planning percentage for the employer costs that apply to your farm, then value owner and family time separately. Divide the total labor cost by finished units to see how much labor each sellable unit must recover.
Do not treat unpaid time as free
Owner time still has an opportunity cost, even when no paycheck leaves the business. Include production, washing, packing, selling, cleanup, messages, and recordkeeping when comparing products or sales channels.
Use your actual payroll burden
Employer taxes, insurance, benefits, overtime, and compliance costs vary by worker and location. This calculator deliberately asks for your own combined planning rate; it does not determine wages, payroll taxes, or legal obligations.
Worked example
Two workers at 30 hours each and $16 an hour cost $960 in wages; a 15% burden adds $144. The owner's 25 hours at $25 adds $625, for $1,729 of labor. Spread across 900 units sold that week, labor is about $1.92 per unit.

What is a payroll burden?
The employer costs on top of gross wages: employer payroll taxes, workers' compensation and other insurance, benefits, and paid time off. It is often 10 to 30 percent of wages, but you should enter the figure from your own payroll records.
How do I value my own labor on the farm?
Use what you would pay someone to do the same tasks, or what you could earn doing something else. Any reasonable number is better than zero, because zero hides the cost inside your prices.
Why translate labor into cost per unit?
Because prices are set per unit. Knowing that labor is $1.92 per unit tells you immediately whether a $5 product can carry it, and it makes the farm product pricing calculator more accurate.
Does this tell me what wages I must pay?
No. Minimum wage, overtime, agricultural exemptions, and payroll taxes are legal questions that vary by state. This tool only totals the costs you enter.
