About the farm stand revenue & break-even calculator
Before building a farm stand, put numbers on it. This calculator projects revenue from the things you can count or estimate, visitors per open day, the share who buy, and the average sale, multiplied across days open and weeks in the season. It then applies your product margin and card fees to find the contribution, subtracts monthly fixed costs like insurance, power, and the payment device, and shows what is left after the one-time setup cost. Break-even sales per week and the number of weeks it takes to pay back the setup are shown alongside.
It is for farms weighing a new stand against the market or a website, and for existing stands deciding whether longer hours, a cooler, or a card reader are worth it.
Revenue from traffic
Weekly revenue is visitors per day x share who buy x average sale x days open. Multiply by weeks in the season for the season figure. Count visitors and sales for a few typical days before trusting the estimate; a stand on a commuter road behaves nothing like one on a farm lane, and a self-serve honor box has a different buying rate and average sale than a staffed store. Oregon State Extension notes that a stand can be as simple as off-street parking, a sign, and a card table with an honor system, which changes both the setup cost and the sales you should expect.
Contribution, fixed costs, and break-even
Product margin is the share of each sale left after the cost of what was sold. Card fees come off next, so the contribution rate is margin minus card fee percent. University of Missouri Extension's break-even guide gives the formula this tool uses: break-even revenue is fixed costs divided by the contribution margin ratio. Weekly fixed costs are the monthly figure divided by 4.33, and break-even sales per week is break-even revenue divided by the average sale. A second break-even adds the setup cost to the season's fixed costs to show the season revenue needed to recover everything in year one.
Payback and what is left out
Payback weeks divides the setup cost by weekly contribution after fixed costs, and the tool flags when that runs longer than the season. Labor is not included unless you add it to fixed costs; a staffed stand should. Sales tax, permits, zoning, food safety rules for prepared foods, and liability are real costs and constraints that the calculator does not evaluate.
Worked example
40 visitors a day with 35% buying at an $18 average sale gives 14 sales a day and 70 a week: $1,260 weekly and $27,720 over a 22-week season. At a 55% product margin the season gross margin is $15,246, less $803.88 in card fees at 2.9%, for a 52.1% contribution rate and $656.46 of weekly contribution ($14,442.12 for the season). Fixed costs of $220 a month are $50.77 a week and $1,116.92 for the season, leaving $13,325.20, or $10,825.20 after a $2,500 setup. Break-even is $97.45 a week (5.4 sales), the season needs $6,942.27 in sales to cover fixed costs and setup, and the setup pays back in about 4.1 weeks.

Frequently asked questions
How much money can a farm stand make?
Revenue is visitors x buying rate x average sale x days open. A stand seeing 40 visitors a day, 35% buying, and an $18 average sale grosses about $1,260 a week; the same stand with 15 visitors grosses about $470. Margin, fixed costs, and labor decide how much of that is profit, which is what the calculator shows.
What does it cost to start a farm stand?
A card table, sign, and honor box can be under a few hundred dollars. A small building with shelving, a cooler, a scale, a card reader, and signage commonly runs a few thousand. Enter your own quote as the one-time setup cost and the tool shows how many weeks of sales pay it back.
How do I calculate break-even for a farm stand?
Divide fixed costs by the contribution margin ratio (product margin minus card fee percent). With $220 a month in fixed costs and a 52% contribution rate, the stand needs about $97 in sales a week to cover fixed costs, and more to recover the setup within the season.
Should I include my own time?
For a staffed stand, yes: add your hours at a fair rate to monthly fixed costs. Self-serve stands need restocking and cash handling time too. Leaving labor out makes almost any stand look profitable.
Do I need a permit or to collect sales tax?
Often yes for one or both, depending on the state, county, and what you sell. This calculator does not evaluate permits, zoning, sales tax, or food safety rules; check with your county and state department of agriculture before opening.
