How to calculate a farm inventory reorder point
A reorder point is the inventory level that should trigger a new purchase. Multiply average daily use by supplier lead time, then add safety stock. This tool expresses safety stock as extra days of typical use so every input stays in the same unit.
Example for egg cartons
If a farm uses six cartons per day, waits 14 days for delivery, and wants seven safety days, the reorder point is 126 cartons: 6 × (14 + 7). When cartons on hand plus confirmed incoming cartons reach that level, it is time to place the next order.
Make the estimate match real farm conditions
Use a recent average that includes seasonality, and track the supplier’s actual delivery time rather than its best-case promise. Increase safety stock for essential or unpredictable supplies, but balance that protection against cash tied up in inventory, storage space, spoilage, and obsolescence.
