How to estimate egg production

Count only hens that are currently laying, then use an observed weekly rate if you have one. The core formula is hens × eggs per hen per week. Dividing by 12 converts eggs to dozens; multiplying the weekly total by 52 estimates a year.

Use a conservative rate for sales commitments

Peak output is not the same as dependable output. Age, breed, shorter days, molt, nutrition, stress, and illness can all reduce laying. If you sell subscriptions or accept preorders, reserve household use and existing commitments before treating the remainder as sellable.

Worked example

Twelve hens averaging five eggs each per week produce about 60 eggs, or five dozen, weekly. After reserving two dozen, the planning surplus is three dozen per week.
