Subscription capacity

Weekly production

After commitments
10.5 dozen
Held as buffer
1.6 dozen

Safe to promise
8.9 dozen
Weekly subscriptions you can sell

0.93 dozen left over each week · about 2.8 hens per subscriber at this rate and buffer

Safe dozens = (weekly dozens − committed) × (1 − buffer). Subscribers = safe dozens ÷ dozens per subscriber, rounded down. Production falls in molt, heat, and short days; the buffer is what absorbs that.

About the egg subscription capacity calculator

Recurring egg customers are the best customers a small flock has, and the fastest way to lose them is to promise more dozens than the hens deliver in November. This calculator starts from your flock and laying rate, removes what you already use or owe, holds back a buffer for the weeks production dips, and returns the number of weekly subscriptions you can sell with confidence.

How subscription capacity is calculated

Weekly dozens are hens × eggs per hen per week ÷ 12. Subtract the dozens already committed to your household, standing orders, and market stock. Then remove a buffer percentage: this is the share of remaining production you refuse to promise, so that molt, heat, short days, and predator losses come out of the buffer instead of a customer's order. What is left, divided by dozens per subscriber per week, is your safe subscriber count, rounded down.

Choosing a buffer

Ten to twenty percent is a common planning range for an established flock with mixed ages. Use more if the flock is aging, if you do not add light in winter, or if your laying rate is from summer only. A subscription that pauses or shrinks in winter can run a smaller buffer than one that promises the same dozen every week of the year.

Worked example

30 hens at 5 eggs a week lay 150 eggs, or 12.5 dozen, weekly. Reserving 2 dozen for the house leaves 10.5. A 15% buffer holds back about 1.6 dozen, leaving 8.9 dozen to commit. At one dozen per subscriber that supports 8 weekly subscriptions with about 0.9 dozen left over for the stand. Put another way, every subscriber needs about 2.8 hens behind them at that rate and buffer.

Frequently asked questions

How many hens do I need for an egg subscription?

Roughly three hens per weekly dozen when you allow for a buffer and a five-egg-a-week average. Twenty subscribers at a dozen a week therefore need about 60 laying hens plus whatever you keep for household and other sales.

What happens when production drops in winter?

The buffer absorbs the first part of the drop. Beyond that, many farms either pause subscriptions for the shortest weeks, offer a half dozen, or add supplemental light. Decide the policy before you sell, and write it into the subscription terms.

Should I count pullets that will start laying soon?

Not until they are laying. Use the chicken laying age calculator to estimate when they will start, then add them to the flock count at that point. Selling capacity you do not have yet is how oversold weeks happen.

How is this different from the egg production calculator?

The production calculator estimates output by period. This tool applies your reserves and buffer and converts the remainder into a subscriber count, which is the decision a subscription program actually needs.
