Processing window

7 to 9 weeks of age. Weigh a few birds a week before; live weight, not the calendar, decides the day.

Processing window = arrival + 7 to 9 weeks. Working backward, arrival = target date minus the midpoint of that window. Feed uses Kentucky ASC-191 cumulative intake per Cornish cross by week (10.26 lb at 7 weeks, 16.23 lb at 9). Dates are planning suggestions; your processor's calendar and your birds' weights come first.

About the broiler processing date calculator

Meat birds run on a clock. Chicks arrive, spend a few weeks in the brooder, move to the pen or tractor, and are ready in a window of a few weeks that the processor needs to know about well in advance. This calculator works that calendar in either direction: enter the day chicks arrive to see when they will be ready, or enter the day you want to process and see when to have chicks arrive. It also estimates batch feed from the Kentucky Extension intake table and suggests a date to book your processor.

It is for anyone raising broilers who has to coordinate a hatchery order, a brooder, and a processing appointment.

Processing windows by bird type

University of New Hampshire Extension says meat-production birds raised to about 5 lb are usually processed right at 8 weeks of age, describes processing a flock in quarters at 7, 8, 9, and 10 weeks, and puts Freedom and Red Ranger types at 12 to 15 weeks. The Cornish cross preset uses 7 to 9 weeks around that 8-week center; the slow-growing preset uses 11 to 14 weeks, starting a week before the Ranger window because some slower hybrids finish sooner. Ohio State and Minnesota extension both put Cornish cross at 6 to 8 weeks and other breeds at 10 to 12, so treat every window as a planning range and weigh a few birds the week before.

Brooder, feed, and booking

The brooder move-out date adds about 3 weeks to arrival; it is a planning suggestion, and extension guidance ranges from 2 weeks in a warm season to 5 weeks before all heat comes off. Feed for the batch multiplies birds by Kentucky Extension's cumulative intake for the earliest and latest week of the window: 10.26 lb per bird at 7 weeks and 16.23 lb at 9. The table ends at week 9, so for slow-growing birds the tool shows the week 9 figure as a floor and says so.

The booking date subtracts 6 to 8 weeks from the start of the window. Small processors fill their summer and fall calendars early, so many growers book before the chicks are even ordered.

Worked example: 50 Cornish cross arriving April 6

Chicks arrive Monday, April 6, 2026 (enter your own arrival date; the tool opens on today's date). With the Cornish cross window of 7 to 9 weeks, the processing window runs from Monday, May 25 to Monday, June 8, 2026. Brooder move-out is about 3 weeks later, Monday, April 27. Booking 8 weeks ahead of the window means calling the processor by Monday, March 30, before the chicks arrive. Fifty birds eat about 513 to 812 lb of feed over the window, 10.3 to 16.2 bags at 50 lb. Working backward instead, a target date of Monday, June 1 gives an arrival window of March 30 to April 13, centered on April 6.

Frequently asked questions

When are Cornish cross ready to process?

Usually at 7 to 9 weeks, with 8 weeks the most common target for a 5 lb live bird. Extension guides quote 6 to 8 weeks for smaller fryers and 9 to 12 weeks for roasters. Weigh a few birds; the scale decides, not the calendar.

How long does it take to raise slow-growing or Ranger broilers?

About 11 to 14 weeks, and New Hampshire Extension gives 12 to 15 weeks for Freedom and Red Rangers. They reach the same carcass weight 3 to 6 weeks after a Cornish cross and eat more feed in total.

When should I book the processor?

Six to eight weeks before your window opens, which is often before the chicks arrive. Ask for a range of dates so a slow or fast batch still has a slot, and confirm the count a week ahead.

When do broiler chicks leave the brooder?

Typically around 3 weeks, once they are feathered enough for the season and the pen. In cold weather keep a heat source available until about 5 weeks; in warm weather some growers move them out at 2 weeks with a lamp in the tractor.
