Males, pens, and hatching eggs
Roosters per pen = hens per pen รท hens per rooster, rounded up, at least 1. Total roosters = pens x roosters per pen. Hatching eggs = hens x eggs set per hen per week. Fertility also depends on male age, feet and leg soundness, nutrition, and egg storage; check it with the hatch rate calculator.
About the breeding flock ratio calculator
Too few roosters and fertility drops; too many and the hens get harassed, feed is wasted, and the extra males fight. This calculator sizes the male side of a breeding flock from your hen count and a hens-per-rooster ratio, then lays the group out across the pens you actually have, because a pen with four hens still needs its own male. It reports roosters needed, hens and roosters per pen, the real ratio that results, spare males or a shortfall against what you have, and the hatching eggs the group will give you per week and per season.
Hens per rooster
University of Georgia Extension's backyard flock guide recommends at least one male per 10 females to ensure good fertility, and University of Kentucky Extension's poultry breeding page puts the typical ratio at 6 to 8 hens per rooster, varying by breed. UKY notes the ratio varies by breed; many breeders run heavy breeds and small pens at the lower end, a practice to confirm against your own fertility records. The bantam preset is a starting point only, not an extension figure. Whatever you start with, candling and the hatch rate calculator will tell you within two hatches whether fertility says to change it.
Pens change the count
Roosters per pen = hens per pen รท hens per rooster, rounded up, at least one. Total roosters is that times the pens. Thirty hens at 10 per male need 3 roosters whether they live in one pen or three, but split into five pens of six they need 5, because every pen needs a male. The calculator shows both the ratio-only number and the pen-adjusted number so you can see what the pen layout costs you in extra males, and how many of the males on hand are spare.
Hatching eggs from the group
Weekly hatching eggs are hens times the eggs per hen per week you will actually set, after eating eggs, dirty and misshapen eggs, and the days you do not collect. Multiply by the breeding season in weeks for a season total. That number feeds the incubator capacity planner and the hatching egg inventory calculator. It does not account for fertility or hatch rate; those come later in the pipeline. Nothing here is veterinary advice: a fertility problem that persists at a sound ratio is a health, age, or nutrition question for your veterinarian or extension office.
Worked example
30 breeding hens at the large-fowl preset of 10 hens per rooster, in 3 pens, with 5 roosters on hand, a 12-week breeding season, and 4 eggs per hen per week set for hatching. Each pen holds 10 hens and needs 1 rooster, so the flock needs 3 roosters, the same as the ratio alone, and runs at 10 hens per rooster; 2 of the 5 males on hand are spare. The group supplies 120 hatching eggs a week, about 40 per pen, and 1,440 over the 12-week season.

Frequently asked questions
How many hens per rooster for fertile eggs?
Extension guidance ranges from one male per 10 hens (University of Georgia) to 6 to 8 hens per rooster (University of Kentucky). Start inside that range and let your fertility rate at candling decide whether to adjust.
Can one rooster cover 20 hens?
Twenty hens per male is beyond both extension ranges, so fertility usually falls. Two males in a 20-hen pen is the safer plan.
How many roosters do I need for 30 hens?
Three at 10 hens per rooster, or four to five at the 6 to 8 range. If the hens are split across pens, every pen needs at least one male, which can raise the total.
What about too many roosters?
Excess males fight, over-mate hens, and eat feed without adding fertility. Keep spare males in a separate bachelor pen so a replacement is ready if a breeding male is injured or infertile.
Does this tell me how many chicks I will get?
No. It gives hatching eggs from the group. Run those eggs through the hatch rate calculator with your fertility and hatch of fertile to estimate chicks, and through the incubator capacity planner to see whether they fit your machines.
